We are pleased to announce a group exhibition by Euske Oiwa, Issei Yamagata, Kosuke Nagata, and Yuu Yamamoto.
They are born around 1990 and are commonly said to be generations of "pressure-free education" or "digital native".
But what we should pay attention to is not such generation indices, but their post-medium-like attitude toward their production that sometimes seems to be a bit old-fashioned. Despite their academic background such as paintings, films and designs, they do not depend on a specific medium, but they mix a plurality of media to produce their works.
Such disposition is due to the rapid diversification of viewing experience, which means that our experiences are not only in the exhibition space but also through media such as hearsay and catalogs, and the internet in recent years. A syncterism of media in their works are, a bit speculative speaking, practices to deconstruct relationships between actual exhibition rooms and miscellaneous places of the viewing experience.
Although this exhibition is held in the place which is not prepared for viewing, each work is not necessarily related to site-specificity.
Alternatively, our main interest lies in a contradiction under the contemporary condition of viewing locations: arbitrariness and particularity. The former means that every works are photographed and uploaded to the internet, then are experienced in miscellaneous places with a browser. The latter means that our viewing experience always needs the certain place no matter where/how we do it: in an actual viewing room, with smartphone on a train, with laptop computer in our room. What we would like to show in this exhibition are practices in the interactional and dynamic structure of viewing experience, rather than in a dichotomy between orthodox viewing spaces and their miscellaneous representation through media.


このたび、大岩雄典、永田康祐、山形一生、山本悠によるグループ展『Surfin'』を開催します。
彼ら４人は1990年前後生まれであり、俗に「ゆとり世代」であるとか「デジタルネイティブ」であると評されている世代です。

しかし本展で注目したいのは、そのような世代論ではなく、彼らに共通する一見すると古めかしくも感じられるポストメディウム的な制作の態度です。彼らはそれぞれ絵画や映像、デザインなどの専門的な教育を受けつつも、それらに固有のメディアではなく、複数のメディアが混淆した作品制作を行っています。

これらの背景には、鑑賞経験の急速な多様化、つまりそれらが展示空間で鑑賞されるのみならず、伝聞や図録、近年であればSNSなどのメディアを通じても鑑賞されているという状況があります。彼らの用いるメディアの異種混淆性は、いささか思弁的にいえば、こうした様々な鑑賞の場と実際の展示空間の関係を脱構築しようとするものであるといえるでしょう。

ふだん展示空間として用いられない場所を利用した本展は、展示場所のスペシフィシティに対して応答するというわけではありません。むしろ、どこで展示しようともやがては写真がアップロードされて、ブラウザを通じてさまざまな場所で鑑賞されてしまうといった鑑賞空間の定位不可能性と、また裏腹に、いかなる状況でもそのわれわれはかならずどこかに定位している──展示室であれ、電車内のスマートフォンであれ、自室のラップトップコンピュータであれ──という二重の事実を中心的関心としています。
オーソドクスな鑑賞空間としての展示室とそれを表象する諸々のメディアという二項対立ではなく、それらが相互作用したり、ときにその主従が逆転したりさえするような状況における実践として、本展は企画されています。
